Oktoberfest at Ober

Gatlinburg

Ober Gatlinburg is celebrating October with a fantastic festival featuring Bavarian-style food, drink and music, but you don’t have to don your finest lederhosen or dirndls to be a part of the fun.

OktOBERfest returns to its Gatlinburg-style roots with 38 days of merrymaking as the resort commemorates the 208th anniversary of the popular festival held in Munich, Germany.

The Bavarian Fun Makers Band, in authentic costumes, will perform traditional Bavarian folk dances, schuhplattling, oompah music, sing-a-longs, yodels and more with daily shows and multiple performances every day during Oktoberfest.  Special Oktoberfest Biers will be served along with traditional German wurst, schnitzel, sauerkraut, strudel, pretzels and more.

Oktoberfest was a popular event when the Heidelberg Castle operated its restaurant at Ober Gatlinburg in the 1980s.

The first Oktoberfest was not really a festival at all, but the public celebration of the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig I and Princess Therese of Bavaria on October 17, 1810. Held on a large meadow named the Theresienwiese in Munich, the party featured a horse race, beer, food, music and dancing.  Anniversary celebrations continue each year, usually starting in late September and ending in the first week of October, with some six million people attending annually.

Bowzer Rock & Roll Doo-Wop Show

Country Tonite presents Bowzer Rock & Roll as part of their 2019 Celebrity Concert Series.

The stunning disparity between mild-mannered Jon Bauman and his creation and alter ego, the inimitable “Bowzer,” has raised a lot of eyebrows in the entertainment industry. That’s because Jon’s portrayal of “Bowzer,” star of “Sha Na Na” for 14 years, was so convincing that the casual observer was certain this hilarious, gangly greaser actually stalked the streets of Brooklyn when he wasn’t appearing with the group. Later, when Jon Bauman washed the grease right out of “Bowzer’s” hair, he surfaced as one of the most multi-dimensional performers in show business today, with careers as host, producer, writer, performer, actor, musician and social activist!

Jon, like “Bowzer,” was born in Brooklyn, but there the resemblance ends. Jon was something of a child prodigy at the piano, and started classical lessons at age seven. He attended the prestigious Juilliard School beginning age 12 and ultimately graduated Magna Cum Laude from equally prestigious Columbia College in New York.

In 1969, Jon joined several of his Columbia classmates in “Sha Na Na” and created the character of “Bowzer.” With “Bowzer” the dominant character on stage, Jon was a major force in leading the group to their successful TV series. At its peak, “Sha Na Na” was the #1 syndicated show in America, and was also seen in 32 foreign countries. The series ran for four years first-run and another three in syndicated strip.

While remaining the star of “Sha Na Na,” Jon branched out on his own and made over 150 solo appearances. He guest starred on programs ranging from “The Barbara Mandrell Show” to “Super Password,” and guest hosted such shows as “An Evening at the Improv.” He also appeared with the group in the phenomenally successful movie, “Grease,” and sang the “Born To Hand Jive” number on the “Grease” album, then the biggest-selling soundtrack album of all time. Gatlinburg Trolley Ride of Lights

Gatlinburg

Visitors can soak up the spirit of the season from the comfort of a Gatlinburg Trolley by taking the relaxing Gatlinburg Winter Magic Trolley Ride of Lights.

The specially designated trolleys carry their guests on a memorable journey through downtown and adjacent Hwy. 321, allowing everyone to experience the magical wonder of Gatlinburg Winter Magic. Trolley times are at 6:30, 7:30 and 8:30.

Featuring one-of-a-kind LED lighting displays along Gatlinburg’s famous downtown Parkway, adjacent River Road, and the triangle juncture of the two, the latest $1.6 million-plus rollout of custom designed and fabricated lighting displays are marked by sections reminiscent of winter forests, evergreens and romance. The Hwy. 321 route features an injection of bright displays as well.

Gatlinburg has converted its entire winter lights program to quarter-watt LED bulbs, replacing the 5-watt incandescent bulbs and saving the City some 95 percent in energy cost and allowing the City to light the entire 120 days of the program for what it once cost for three days of electricity.

Displays featuring animals indigenous to Great Smoky Mountains National Park including deer, foxes, squirrels, and rabbits are part of the program. Many of the timeless displays visitors have grown accustomed to over the past 23 years have been converted to crisp LED as well. Most recently, fanciful snowmen, dancing fountains, a group of international children and a shiny rocking horse have joined the lineup.

Trolley tours do not run on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.
